The 2nd Sunday After Easter
Sermon
Forgiveness Happens Here
Jesus is both Lord and God
There’s a lot that goes on in the upper room.
Jesus appears to his disciples and extends peace to them with his own pierced hands and side.
Then Jesus breathes the Holy Spirit on them and sends them out as His deputies to forgive sins,
just as He did.
But Thomas wasn’t there the first go around, so Jesus returns the next week. But He doesn’t
come back to scold, but He comes back in mercy. He extends his resurrection peace to Thomas
too, despite his stubbornness. He invites Thomas to touch His now glorified wounds. In return,
Thomas makes one of the truest confessions of Christ: “My Lord and my God!”
Yes, Jesus is Lord, that is, our king, our master, our sovereign. And He is also our God, one with
the Father and Spirit, through whom the world was made. The Son of God has come to be our
king. Let this be our confession too!
